Product Overview

Our offshore wind turbine platform integrates the most mature offshore wind technology lines from leading Chinese OEMs: doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) for cost-effective moderate sites, medium-speed semi-direct drive for high-torque reliability in typhoon regions, and direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) for low-maintenance deep-sea projects. All platforms share a common modular nacelle design, centralized converter and unified SCADA architecture, reducing spare-parts inventory and O&M cost for multi-turbine wind farms.

The rotor system uses large-scale carbon-fiber blades (up to 128m length) with pre-bend design for maximum swept area while minimizing tower clearance. The tower and transition piece are anti-corrosion coated with C5-M offshore marine grade, designed for 25-year service life in salt-spray environment. We deliver complete offshore wind farm EPC: wind resource assessment (offshore LiDAR), geotechnical survey, foundation design, turbine supply & installation by heavy-lift vessel, inter-array cables, offshore substation platform, export cable to onshore grid, and long-term O&M service.

Important: Offshore wind CAPEX is 3–4 times that of onshore. Marine installation weather windows, port infrastructure and cable routing are critical project risks. We require at least 12 months of offshore wind LiDAR or met-mast data plus geotechnical survey before final turbine sizing.

Jacket (4-leg lattice) 30 – 60 m Medium depth, rocky seabed, typhoon zone Pin-pile sleeves, installed by crane vessel
Tripod / Tripile 35 – 50 m Medium-depth high-wave sites Heavy-lift crane vessel
Semi-submersible Floating > 60 m Deep water, far-from-shore, Mediterranean / US West Coast Towed from onshore fabrication yard, moored

Offshore Wind Farm Layout Scheme

A typical 500 MW offshore wind farm consists of 28–32 × 16–18 MW turbines arranged in a grid pattern parallel to the prevailing wind direction. Inter-array 66kV submarine cables connect turbines to a central offshore substation platform, then export via 220kV / 330kV HVAC or HVDC cable to the onshore grid substation. The recommended spacing is 8–10 rotor diameters along wind direction and 3–5 rotor diameters cross-wind to minimize wake loss.

  • 500 MW project: 28 × 18MW or 31 × 16MW turbines, 1 offshore substation, ~80 km inter-array cable, ~40 km export cable.
  • 1 GW project: 56 × 18MW turbines, 2 offshore substations, split into two electrical clusters.
  • Wake loss target: < 10% after micro-siting optimization.
  • Marine traffic exclusion zone: 500m radius around each turbine.

Investment Scale & Payback Period

Project Scale Typical Configuration EPC Total Investment Static Payback Period
Pilot / Demonstration 2 × 11 MW = 22 MW (near shore) $90M – $120M 10–12 years (demonstration tariff)
Medium Commercial Farm 50 × 11 MW = 550 MW $2.0B – $2.8B 8–10 years (fixed tariff / CfD)
Large Commercial Farm 31 × 16 MW = 500 MW $2.0B – $2.6B 8–10 years (PPA / auction)
Mega-Scale Offshore 56 × 18 MW = 1,000 MW $3.8B – $5.0B 7–9 years (utility-scale PPA)
Floating Wind Pilot 5 × 15 MW = 75 MW (deep water) $400M – $600M 10–13 years (floating premium)

Note: Offshore wind CAPEX breakdown: turbine supply ~45%, foundation ~20%, subsea cable ~15%, offshore substation ~10%, installation & marine logistics ~7%, others ~3%. Key variables: sea depth, distance to shore, port infrastructure, local content requirement, and offshore installation vessel availability.

Typical Application Scenarios

  • Near-Shore Wind Farm (0–20km): Close to load center, easier grid connection, lower cable cost.
  • Offshore Wind Farm (20–100km): Higher wind resource, larger scale, typical commercial project.
  • Deep-Water Floating Wind (>60m depth): Mediterranean, US West Coast, Japan, Korea — where fixed-bottom is infeasible.
  • Offshore Wind + Green Hydrogen: Electrolyzer on offshore substation, produces green ammonia / methanol for shipping fuel.
  • Island & Coastal Community Power: Replaces expensive diesel generation on remote islands.
  • Oil & Gas Platform Decarbonization: Offshore wind powers existing offshore platforms, reduces associated gas flaring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is the difference between DFIG, medium-speed and direct-drive PMSG offshore turbines?+
DFIG uses a gearbox with partial converter, lowest CAPEX, proven for 8–11MW class. Medium-speed semi-direct drive uses a lighter gearbox + medium-speed generator, balancing reliability and cost, popular in typhoon regions. Direct-drive PMSG eliminates gearbox entirely, lowest maintenance, highest reliability, but heavier and more expensive — preferred for deep-sea floating projects.

Q2: What water depth can offshore wind turbines handle?+
Monopile foundation works up to 40m water depth. Jacket foundation covers 30–60m. Beyond 60m, semi-submersible floating or spar buoy foundation is required. Floating wind is the fastest-growing segment for deep-water markets like Mediterranean, US West Coast, Japan and Korea.

Q3: How much does an offshore wind farm cost per MW?+
Typical fixed-bottom offshore wind EPC is $3.5M–$5.0M per MW, about 3–4 times onshore wind. Floating wind is currently $6M–$8M per MW and dropping fast as scale increases. The main cost drivers are sea depth, distance to shore, foundation type and installation vessel rates.

Q4: What is the capacity factor of offshore wind?+
Offshore wind typically achieves 40–50% capacity factor, significantly higher than onshore (25–35%) because of stronger, steadier wind at sea. A 16MW turbine at 45% CF produces ~63 GWh per year.

Q5: How long is the payback period?+
Typical commercial offshore wind farm payback is 8–12 years under fixed tariff / CfD scheme. With government subsidy or high PPA price, it can shorten to 7–9 years. Floating wind currently takes 10–13 years due to higher CAPEX, but is expected to improve rapidly.

Q6: Can offshore wind survive typhoons?+
Yes. Our platforms are typhoon-class certified to survive 70 m/s (≈ category 5) extreme wind with blades parked and pitched. This is critical for Southeast Asia, Taiwan, South China Sea and Japan regions.

Q7: How is offshore wind maintained?+
Routine maintenance uses Crew Transfer Vessels (CTV) for good-weather access. Major overhauls (gearbox, generator exchange) require Heavy Lift Vessel or SOV (Service Operation Vessel). Digital twin + predictive analytics reduces unplanned downtime. Typical O&M cost is 3–4% of CAPEX per year.

Q8: Can offshore wind be combined with green hydrogen?+
Yes. Many emerging projects place electrolyzers on the offshore substation platform, converting offshore wind directly to green hydrogen, then to green ammonia or methanol for shipping fuel. This solves the “curtailment” and “long export cable” problem for far-offshore wind.

Q9: What is the design lifetime?+
25 years design lifetime, with anti-corrosion C5-M marine coating. Main components (blade, tower, foundation) are designed for 25 years; gearbox and generator may require one major overhaul at 12–15 years.

Q10: Do you provide full EPC or just turbine supply?+
We provide full EPC turn-key: offshore wind assessment, geotechnical survey, foundation, turbine supply & installation, subsea cable, offshore substation, export cable, onshore substation, grid connection, commissioning and 25-year O&M. We can also supply turbines only if you have your own EPC contractor.
